"Drink eight glasses of water a day" became gospel without anyone checking the math. The honest answer is more interesting and more useful: your water needs depend on size, activity, climate and diet, and the right target is closer to a band than a single number. Why "Drink More" Isn't Always Better

The myth that more water is always better leads people to chase 3, 4, even 5 L/day. That's not a free win:

  • Excessive water intake without electrolytes can dilute blood sodium (hyponatremia), causing headache, nausea, confusion — and in extreme cases, dangerous outcomes
  • Endurance athletes have died from over-drinking during long events

What does not work: chugging 1 L at 9 pm to "hit the target". The kidney filtration rate caps at around 1 L/hour; everything above goes through fast, wakes you up overnight, and provides no extra hydration.

Signs You Are Mildly Dehydrated (Before Thirst)

Thirst is a late signal — by the time you feel it, you are already 1–2% dehydrated, and performance is already down by a measurable margin. Earlier signs:

  • Mid-afternoon energy crash that doesn't track meal timing
  • Headache developing across a long day at a desk
  • Dark or strong-smelling urine in the morning
  • Heart rate noticeably elevated at familiar training paces
  • Persistently dry lips or mouth, especially on waking

Catching these early means topping up with 300–500 ml before they become full thirst. The body responds to a steady supply, not heroic catch-up drinking.

Common Mistakes

  • "Coffee dehydrates me." At normal intakes, no — habitual coffee drinkers have similar 24-hour hydration status as water drinkers.
  • Skipping electrolytes on long workouts. Cramps and crashes are usually salt, not water.
  • Force-drinking 4 L "for skin / metabolism." Both effects are tiny; benefits stop at the band above.
  • Using thirst as the only signal in older age. Thirst reliability drops with age — set a routine.
